looking into SC

Post  rippincarpet on Wed Jan 19, 2011 12:57 am

i'm new to rc's in general, but I'm thinking of getting a short course truck
what are the usual rules/regs of racing?
is gas or electric better?
and what car/truck to get that is cheap and easy to maintain?

We race the short course trucks in south glens falls. They are electric and must be stock. The rules are in the vender section. They race on the carpet at racing city. They alternate between the road course and the oval. The slash is the most popular with the sc10 a close second. Both trucks do very well and parts are availible at most any shop.

If your new to RC electric might be better for you to start with as you can run them inside as well as outside.Thereare I think 4 Short course trucks available and as Brett said the Slash and SC10 are the most popular.Losi and HPI also sell SC trucks just to give you a couple of more options,I think I saw a post that Brett had a Slash for sale and his stuff is very well taken care of so you would get a good deal if you don't already have something.

Not that I know a whole lot about SC... but let me see what I can help you with...

First off... do you plan on bashing, racing or both?

Do you want 2wd or 4wd?

Do you plan on racing indoor or outdoor? both?

Basically these days your options are fairly close to limitless when it comes to SC...

I have owned or ran most of the more available SC stuff on the market to include Slash 2wd, Slash 4x4, Blitz, SC10, Slayer, and SCRT10...currently my stable has the SCRT10 and 2 SC10s... and I am pretty comfortable with it... they seem to be a real good race truck although maybe not the most "bashable" of the numbers...

Of the 2wds out there here is where I would rate them...

Bashing:
1 Slash
2 Blitz
3 SC10

Racing:
1 STRC Kit Slash
2 SC10
3 Blitz
4 Stock Slash

Now if you noticed I added the STRC kit slash to the mix with racing... the Slash in stock configuration is way too high CG to race with in comparison to some of the newer racebred stuff out there... the STRC LCG kit on the slash though breathes new life into it... turns it into a racing animal...

2 0r 4wd it doesnt matter

bashing would be running in parking lots.. sandpits... hitting it off trees... running over cats and dogs... under cars... you get what I mean right? drunken

To also answer your maintainence question... all trucks will require some maintainence... and of all of them the slash will probably take the most abuse without maintainence..

With the amount of Traxxas parts available locally... I would suggest a used slash... run it till you feel you may need more out of it (you may never feel that way) and then add the STRC/Rustler kit and rock...

From what I am reading RCH has some indoor slash stuff going on... ScienceNHobby has indoor oval... RC Madness in CT has indoor offroad carpet...BarnstormersRC in Chester, NY has offroad indoor dirt... and I hear rumors of a new track in Mechanicville that may be starting soon... indoor clay offroad... thats about the local rundown...

I know the gentleman thats planning on starting it... it may not even be pursued till mid Feb. so its going to be some wait still... It will be pretty kick ass if it does get off the ground... our outdoor season at our home track was cut pretty short so while it IS snowmobile season I would definately run up there to play around...

After Feb 5th I may have a Blitz roller for sale thats never been on dirt... I bought it with the intention of seeing if I liked the SC10 or Blitz better but ended up driving a buddies Blitz and now I am stuck on my SC10s... I am holding it for a potential buyer till the 5th but after that its fair game...

If you dont have anything it may be better to look into the RTR for $200 range new... most times when you sell a roller it ends up going to someone who has the electronics but doesnt want to buy a RTR... it would end up being probably over $200 unless you found some good deals in used to complete it... not saying you couldnt though... many people are looking to get rid of brushed electronics for next to nothing...
